Presenting Engineering Services with Clarity
A Structured, Professional Web Experience

DHDC Engineering Consulting Services is an Ohio-based engineering firm specializing in Geotechnical Engineering, Subsurface Utilities Engineering, Construction Materials Testing, Special Inspections, and Environmental Engineering. As a DBE, MBE, EDGE, SBE, and LEDE certified firm, DHDC serves clients across the public and private sectors, from state agencies and municipalities to developers, contractors, and utility companies.

The firm needed a website that did justice to the depth and credibility of its work. Hence the design needed to be a structured, easy-to-navigate digital experience that translated technical services into clear, accessible information, making complex, specialized services legible for both technical and non-technical audiences. This project was developed through my long-standing partnership with Kram & Associates, with Kram handling client relations and strategic direction while I led design and front-end development.

The Client & The Brief

DHDC's services are technically sophisticated and genuinely specialized. Geotechnical engineering, subsurface utility mapping, and construction materials testing are not fields most visitors are walking in with deep familiarity. Yet the site needed to communicate credibility and expertise to both the technical experts evaluating the firm's qualifications and the business decision-makers and project managers who needed to quickly understand whether DHDC could solve their problem.

The brief called for a clean, professional digital presence with clear service organization, strong credibility signals, and frictionless navigation. The site also needed to reflect DHDC's certifications and multi-disciplinary capabilities without overwhelming or losing the visitor.

The Challenge

Engineering services are among the more difficult things to present online. The work is highly technical, the audience is varied, and the stakes for getting it wrong, either by oversimplifying or overwhelming it, are real. A prospective client who can't quickly understand what DHDC does or find the right service area will simply leave.

The specific challenges included:

  • Organizing multiple distinct service disciplines into a logical, intuitive structure that users could navigate quickly.
  • Presenting highly technical content with clarity and readability, without dumbing it down for the experts in the audience.
  • Building a visual tone that communicated professionalism, reliability, and established credibility from first contact.
  • Creating a site that served multiple audience types—technical engineers, project managers, government procurement officers, and private developers—without creating separate experiences for each.

Relevant to SaaS & Technology Hiring: Making specialized, technical content accessible to non-technical stakeholders is one of the defining challenges of B2B SaaS design. The same information architecture discipline applied here – Structuring complex service offerings so that different user types can navigate to what they need without friction – is directly transferable to product design for enterprise software, technical platforms, and multi-audience digital experiences.

My Role

I led website design and front-end development for the project, with client communication and strategic direction managed through Kram & Associates. My responsibilities included information architecture, content organization, navigation design, visual design, and front-end development.

The real challenge was not the design itself. It was making a highly technical organization feel accessible to multiple audiences with very different needs. Engineers, project managers, government agencies, developers, and private-sector clients all arrive looking for different information. My role was to create a structure that allowed each audience to quickly find what mattered to them, without feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of the services being offered.

The Approach

Information Architecture & Content Clarity
The first design decision was structural. DHDC's services needed to be broken into clearly defined, independently navigable areas so that a visitor looking for geotechnical engineering could find it immediately, without having to parse everything else the firm offers. A service-based navigation hierarchy gave each discipline its own space while keeping the full picture accessible from a single menu.

Designing for Multiple User Types
The site needed to serve two fundamentally different kinds of visitors simultaneously: technical professionals evaluating the firm's technical qualifications, and business or government stakeholders assessing fit, certifications, and capacity. Rather than creating separate user paths, the design used layered content depth, clear top-level summaries with the technical detail available one level deeper, so each user type could engage at the level they needed.

Clarity-Driven Layout
A clean, restrained layout prioritized readability throughout. Typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy were used deliberately to guide the eye and reduce cognitive load. The design avoids unnecessary decorative elements. Every visual decision is in service of making the content easier to engage with.

Professional Tone & Credibility Signals
Certifications, client testimonials from the City of Columbus and Franklin County Engineers, and the client roster were all prominently integrated into the design as credibility anchors. For a firm operating in government and public sector contracting, these signals carry real weight and needed to be accessible, not buried.

Navigation & User Flow
Navigation was designed to feel intuitive and direct. Users can move from a top-level service description into technical detail, or from the homepage directly to a contact or quote request, with minimal friction. The structure supports both the scanning visitor and the one doing deep due diligence.

What Was Delivered

  • Website design and front-end development
  • Information architecture and content structuring across multiple service disciplines
  • Service-based navigation and page hierarchy
  • Layout system built around clarity and usability, readability, and professional visual tone
  • Integration of certification credentials, testimonials, and client roster as credibility anchors
  • User flow design supporting both quick scanning and deeper technical exploration
  • Visual refinement aligned with a professional engineering brand

→
02

By organizing complex information into an accessible format, the site improves usability while reinforcing professionalism and trust, creating a strong foundation for client engagement and business growth.

→
03

Information Architecture for complex, multi-discipline service Offerings: Organizing technically dense content into a structure that allows different user types to navigate directly to what they need, without friction or confusion.

→
03

Designing for multiple audience types simultaneously: The site serves both technical engineers evaluating qualifications and business decision-makers assessing fit, using layered content depth rather than separate user paths.

→
05

Making specialized technical content accessible without oversimplifying it: A discipline central to B2B SaaS and enterprise software design, where the same product must speak clearly to both technical evaluators and executive stakeholders.

→
06

Effective collaboration through a partner structure: working through Kram & Associates as an intermediary, delivering high-quality design work from a clear brief without direct client access, demonstrating adaptability across different working models.

The Impact

The website provided DHDC with a professional digital presence that clearly communicated its capabilities, certifications, and areas of expertise. The result was a more accessible experience for both technical and non-technical audiences while reinforcing the firm's credibility and professionalism.
