Project Overview

A Design System Built for an Exceptionally Broad Audience

Community-college communication rarely speaks to one neat demographic. Columbus State serves students at very different ages, career stages, educational goals, and life circumstances, making audience clarity a constant design challenge. A single institution functions simultaneously as a transfer pathway, workforce-development hub, trade-school resource, continuing-education provider, and entry point to new opportunities.

The work spans two distinct visual periods: an earlier era with greater event-driven creative freedom, and a later period shaped by a formal institutional rebrand. Across both, the design challenge remained consistent: make information approachable, inclusive, useful, and visually engaging without losing the structure required by a large public institution.

Design Approach

Columbus State’s open-enrollment mission turns accessibility into more than a compliance consideration. Communications must work for people with widely different backgrounds, goals, and levels of familiarity with higher education. Clear hierarchy, inclusive imagery, readable typography, and adaptable campaign systems became essential tools for reaching that range of audiences.

The role combined Front-End Web Development, Graphic Design, and Photography, allowing digital communication, campaign materials, event promotion, and student-facing creative to inform one another. When the internal design team reached capacity, projects expanded across posters, bookmarks, postcards, banners, event materials, and supporting photography.

Working both before and after the institutional rebrand provided a direct view of how visual freedom and formal brand standards change the design process. The strongest solutions respected the system while still finding enough flexibility to keep audience needs, clarity, and engagement at the center.
